The goal of this article is to analyze how the use of a functional grammar can contribute to the formation of students’ linguistic and textual competences regarding the production of the dissertative-argumentative text, since, despite the theoretical advances, Brazilian students do not present the basic competences to enter the University, according to the results demonstrated in Enem. The research is descriptive, exploratory and qualitative in nature. In the data analysis, the Textual Analysis of Discourses (ATD), proposed by Jean-Michel Adam, was used, since the corpus of the investigation consisted of interviews and texts.
