Abstract

After the evolution brought by Building Information Modeling (BIM), extended realities emerge with the technological potential to improve project integration and immersion, although there is still limited data on their applications. Thus, this study aimed to evaluate the use of virtual reality in BIM models, in the form of a Virtual Tour. A multiple case study was carried out from a convenience sample, consisting of eight projects from a consulting engineering company. The information was collected through meetings and documents and evaluated based on the SWOT technique. As a result, its use in the stakeholder engagement and project/construction interface support phases stood out. In addition, this technology proved to be strong due to its flexibility for remote handling and on various devices, innovating the form of visualization and facilitating the decision-making process. Restrictive factors such as operating costs and software limitations are points of attention for improvement. The application of virtual reality has proven to be efficient in supporting the different phases of construction. However, large-scale implementation, standardization, and expansion of hardware use are still necessary to bring a more widespread market in this area.

Author Biographies

Sabrina Rayane Silva Lucena, University of Pernambuco

Graduated in Civil Engineering from the Polytechnic School of Pernambuco (POLI), where she is currently pursuing a Master's degree in BIM. In the academic field, she was a teaching assistant for the programming course in the 2019.1 semester, during which she won the Academic Excellence Award, and a teaching assistant for Architecture in the 2021.2 semester. She participated in scientific initiation projects in the area of renewable energy sources and sustainability with the support of CNPq. She was part of the Junior Enterprise associated with POLI, where she gained experience in civil construction projects and developed commercial and strategic techniques. Soon after, she worked on the development of modeling, dimensioning, and documentation projects for building installations. She is currently a member of the Ergonomics, Hygiene, and Occupational Safety Research Group at the University of Pernambuco - POLI/UPE, where she conducts research focused on BIM. Professionally, she works in the field of civil construction management.

Dra Bianca Maria Vasconcelos, University of Pernambuco

She is an adjunct professor at the Polytechnic School of the University of Pernambuco (UPE), a permanent lecturer in the Civil Engineering Graduate Program (PEC), and leader of the research group registered with CNPq “Ergonomics, Hygiene, and Occupational Safety.” She is the area coordinator of the Structuring Teaching Nucleus (NDE) of the Civil Engineering course. She is editor of REPA (Journal of Engineering and Applied Research), member of the scientific committee of SHO (SPOSHO/PT), member of GT Formación and GT Diseño y estética de las infraestructuras of RUITEM (Ibero-American University Network for Territory and Mobility). She has coordinated/coordinates research projects with funding from public development agencies (CAPES, CNPq, FACEPE) and partnerships with industry. She works in Accessibility and Assistive Technologies; BIM; Construction 4.0; Macroergonomics; Occupational Safety in Construction.
