We have never been human: essay on a counter-colonial psychology
DOI:
https://doi.org/10.22456/2238-152X.149355Abstract
This essay seeks to deterritorialize and question what humanity and/or human exceptionalism want in us (Deleuze,
2018). These colonialist concepts grant privileges to a select group while violently excluding those who do not
fit or submit. Engaged with Afropindoramic thought, we learn from our teachers that the earth and the animals
also eat and desire (Bispo dos Santos, 2023); to say no to the voluntary servitude that makes us want - or hope - to
enter a club, the “club of humans,” which functions through the logic of exception (Krenak, 2020); to hack the
colonialist system (Baniwa, 2018) and to deny submission to it (Esbell, 2021). Through these compositions and
images that think through our bodies, we aim, like Krenak (2019), to accept the fall of the humanity we thought
we were and to build new forms of shelter where we can collectively take refuge from the excess of chaos.
