Between margins and walls: when the river becomes our street

In May 2024, Rio Grande do Sul was hit by unprecedented floods, exposing structural failures and the absence of preventive measures previously indicated by meteorological alerts and reports. In this context, graduate students from the Social and Institutional Psychology Program at UFRGS, through the event Temas em Debate, developed collective reflections, shifting from witnesses to researchers and workers affected by the disaster. This theoretical-reflective essay, based on a collective fabulation featuring the character Yara, discusses interactions between human and non-human actors in urban territories, considering the impacts of extractivist ways of life. It draws on the concept of “Cosmophobia” (Bispo dos Santos, 2023) to problematize the disconnection between humans and nature, and on Donna Haraway (2023) to reflect on “becoming-with” and kinship-making as survival strategies amid the existential rupture caused by the catastrophe, highlighting life’s interdependence and fragility.
