Abstract

The expansion of Information Technology and Artificial Intelligence has reshaped processes of information production, circulation, mediation, and use in contemporary society, with significant effects on work, education, citizenship, and public governance. This article presents a theoretical-analytical essay, supported by a narrative and interdisciplinary literature review, aiming to critically examine the impacts, opportunities, and risks associated with the widespread adoption of these technologies. From the perspective of Information Science, the analysis emphasizes three key dimensions: information literacy, data governance, and informational ethics. The paper discusses how information Technology and artificial intelligence broaden access to knowledge, services, and new forms of social participation, while also intensifying asymmetries, opaque decision-making processes, algorithmic biases, and new forms of digital exclusion. The study argues that addressing these challenges requires public policies, regulatory arrangements, and educational practices guided by transparency, informational justice, and the critical use of digital technologies. It concludes that Information Science contributes to this debate by understanding artificial intelligence not merely as technical innovation, but as a sociotechnical phenomenon that reorganizes mediations, competencies, and regimes of informational legitimacy.
