This study investigates how production and circulation characteristics individualize early modern book copies by analyzing nine digitized copies of Gaspar Barléu’s Rerum per octennium in Brasilia [...], 1647. The research compared copies from eight libraries, four Brazilian and four foreign. Material analysis revealed that all copies possess at least three distinctive elements. Differences include variations in bindings, positioning and absence of engravings, pages or gathered sheets, among others. Furthermore, provenance marks such as stamps, signatures, bookplates, and handwritten annotations confer uniqueness to each copy. The study concludes that detailed material description is fundamental for the individualization of rare books, adding informational, social, and historical value to collections. The research also highlights the importance of complete and high-quality digitization for the proper analysis of these artifacts.
