Descriptive metadata in digital collections
a case study in the Acervo de Línguas Indígenas do Museu Paraense Emílio Goeldi

With recent technical and technological advances in the field of information, there has been a proliferation of digital files, so it is important to control information in digital databases. The use of a standardized metadata system can be a solution to the problem of information dispersion since the metadata standard manages and organizes data according to its functionality. This article aims to analyze the strategies developed to optimize the cataloging and information retrieval process for the indigenous language collection at the Museu Paraense Emílio Goeldi. This study seeks to apply the principles of the General Theory of Terminology, the Communicational Theory of Terminology, and the Theory of Indexing, linking them to the areas of Linguistics and Information Science. The methodology consisted of an analysis of the types of information resources present in the collection of indigenous languages at the Museu Paraense Emílio Goeldi and the development and application of a cataloging/indexing policy for the creation of metadata and the standardization of existing metadata and new materials to be included in this collection. The initial results showed that the creation of metadata consistent with the content of the media files makes it possible to identify the information resource in advance. The process of creating descriptive metadata can be standardized through an indexing policy or a manual on metadata creation, in order to provide a satisfactory basis for users' information needs.
