Abstract

In this study, the field of knowledge known as bibliometrics is analyzed. First, the three basic laws in the field are reviewed: Lotka’s Law of productivity of authors; Bradford’s Law of journal dispersion; and Zipf’s Law of word frequency, along with their developments and applications in recent times. The epidemic theory and citations analysis are also reviewed, as well as their contemporary applications, like, for example, advanced research studies and the impact factor. Finally, it analyzes the development of this field of studies in Brazil and current trends, emphasizing the approaches that seek to broaden the scope of studies that have integrated bibliometric methods and distinct theories.
