THE LIBERAL FOUNDATION OF WESTERN DEMOCRATIC EDUCATION: THE PEDAGOGICAL LEGACY OF LOCKE AND ROUSSEAU

Abstract

The aim of this article is to establish the difference between two currents of thought which, although they come from the same liberal tradition, have given rise to different political trends in the present day, intervening on the democratisation of the contemporary school. Hermeneutic pedagogy is used as a working method to analyse the historical, political and educational path of liberalism, as well as its implications. In this way, two liberal traditions are identified, each of which has advocated a different pedagogical model, reconstructing a political microcosm in schools in order to reproduce itself. It concludes with the idea that our contemporaneity is based on a mistaken idea of the extreme democratisation of schools, which leads to a permanent questioning of the school as an institution.

Cruz Flores-Rodríguez, Universidad de Extremadura

Assistant professor of the Department of Educational Sciences of the University of Extremadura and research member of the GEXTHE group (Extremadura Research Group in Theory and History of Education). He is the author of several articles in impact magazines and a participant in numerous conferences related to Politics, Theory and Philosophy and the History of Education. Graduated in Primary Education from the University of Extremadura, Master's Degree in Research in Social and Legal Sciences and PhD from the same university. Within the area of Theory and History of Education, he specializes in the political and philosophical foundations of contemporary education.

Miguel Martín-Sánchez

MIGUEL MARTÍN-SÁNCHEZ é professor do Departamento de Ciências da Educação da Universidade de Extremadura, na Espanha. Leciona na Faculdade de Formação de Professores, na área de Teoria e História da Educação. Doutor em Pedagogia pela Universidade de Salamanca com prêmio extraordinário e mestre pela Universidade Pablo de Olavide de Sevilha. É autor de inúmeros artigos em revistas especializadas, monografias e capítulos de livros. As suas linhas de investigação
centram-se na Pedagogia Social, na Política Educativa, na Teoria da Educação e na História da Educação.
