Analysis of water consumption
a case study at Joinville airport

The preservation of water worldwide is one of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals established by the United Nations (UN). Airports, as major water consumers, can implement a water efficiency plan, including continuous monitoring of water demand. This article aims to analyze water consumption from 2016 to 2021 at the Joinville airport, located at the most populous city in the state of Santa Catarina and third in southern Brazil. The analysis considers the number of passengers and the per capita water consumption (liters*passenger-1) considering seasonal fluctuations, changes to internal water system for improved operational safety, and water consumption behavior before and during the Covid-19 pandemic. The results reveal an inverse relationship between the number of passengers and the per capita water consumption, with notable consumption peaks during the Covid-19 pandemic. Furthermore, the analysis highlights the importance of adopting sustainable systems and enhancing water efficiency to mitigate environmental impacts and meet the projected growth in the aviation sector.
