Use of MAEA to support evidence-based design
the case of mapping a preliminary study for a hospital emergency room

Overcrowding and inadequate layouts are frequent issues in Healthcare Facilities (EAS), impacting service quality. Research highlights the need for evaluation approaches that simulate building performance and support decision-making in design. The COVID-19 pandemic reinforced the importance of agile methods for assessing adaptations in EAS. This study explores the application of the Mapping of Activities and Environment Allocation (MAEA) method to support the renovation of the Adult Emergency Room (PSA) at the University Hospital of USP. The research compares the existing layout with the proposed renovation, using activity allocation mapping and congruence analysis of alternative spatial arrangements to identify unforeseen interactions and improvement opportunities. The analysis, presented to the architect and clients, proved effective in identifying areas for improvement and key concerns for the design team. The study highlights MAEA’s potential to foster more productive dialogue among stakeholders, ensuring evidence-based decisions aligned with user needs.
