Controlling images and the racial identity of light-skinned Black men

This study analyzes the process through which light-skinned Black men construct their racial identities, contributing to the study of ethnic-racial relations in Brazil from an intersectional perspective. Based on materials from a master's research project, the study examines the associated controlling images and their respective subjective effects. Drawing on authors such as Patricia Hill Collins, bell hooks, Neusa Santos Souza, and Grada Kilomba, the article highlights how controlling images shape social interactions and processes of identification, constituting racial identities and senses of racial belonging among light-skinned Black men. The findings point to fear as a central affect in these men's experiences, operating as a form of social and subjective control. The importance of constructing a Black racial identity oriented toward the valorization of Blackness is emphasized, moving toward a form of masculinity grounded in collectivity, solidarity, respect, and disalienation.
