Abstract

This article intends to examine some questions referring to the relations between “power” and “book” in the times of the medieval manuscript books, reflecting on this question through an analysis of the Portuguese ‘ancestry books’ from the 13th and 14th centuries. In the first part of the article, the relations between power, society and the text of the ancestry books are examined. In the second part, the analysis is directed to the relations between power, society and the book as an object submitted to social forms of control.
