Abstract

Between July and August 2007, Porto Alegre’s main media vehicles were observed by a team of professors and students of the Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul, Faculdade de Biblioteconomia e Comunicação with the purpose of identifying the city that they help create in the imaginary of citizens. This paper is part of a broader research project that aims at knowing Latin America’s urban imaginaries (SILVA, 2004), and is extended to some European cities. Following Silva’s methodology, the research was divided in three axis that mutually cross: official and historical data of the municipal district, survey to verify citizens’s perception about the city and analysis of the representations constructed by different media, the last one being the focus point of this text.
