Information representation and the semanticweb

This article analyzes the relationship between Information Representation and the Semantic Web, seeking to understand how the convergence between these areas contributes to the organization, retrieval, and qualified use of information on the web. The study is characterized as a bibliographic review conducted in the Referential Database of Journal Articles in Information Science and Journal Portal of the Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior covering publications from 2000 to 2024 and including studies from the fields of Information Science, Linguistics, and Information Technology. The results indicate that the articulation between the foundations of Information Representation and Semantic Web technologies enhances the explicit representation of meaning, system interoperability, and more precise information retrieval. In this context, benefits such as improved access and usability, as well as the automation of cognitive processes, are highlighted. The analysis also identifies relevant applications of this integration, including recommendation systems, intelligent digital libraries, and interoperability between databases, in addition to technical and social challenges associated with the implementation of these models. It is concluded that the integration of the Semantic Web and Information Representation expands the potential of information systems, contributing to more structured, interoperable, and meaning-oriented digital environments.
