Book and Prison: the case of Em câmara lenta, by Renato Tapajós
Keywords:
Renato Tapajós. Censorship. Military dictatorship. The 1970'sAbstract
This paper aims to examine the arrest of Renato Tapajós in 1977 motivated by the publication of his book Em câmara lenta (In Slow Motion). It is the only case of a writer being arrested during the military dictatorship because of the content of a book. Besides, it is the only case in the recent history of Brazil of an apprehension because of a novel. We try to understand the peculiarity of this process and its place in the book history in Brazil. We argue for the idea that Tapajós’s arrest occurred as and attempt by the repression powers to prevent the publication of Left militants’ memory books.Downloads
