The uses of term diagnosis in the Archival Science

This article presents a literature review on the practice of collecting
data on archives, based on a research carried out for a Master's degree about
records survey in Brazil. It is a qualitative and descriptive study, based on a
bibliographic and documentary search. From the analysis carried out, it is noted
that the term “diagnóstico” (in Portuguese, which translates to “diagnosis” in
English) is not always used in other languages. We can observe the use of the
term “records survey” instead of “diagnosis” in English and, in French, “analyze
des besoins” and not “diagnostic.” In Brazil, records survey developed in the
field of Archival Science are entitled “diagnósticos de arquivo”.
