Abstract

The article investigates characteristics and perceptions of distance learning librarianship students from the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul, in order to consider best practices for this teaching method. Internet tools such as e-mail, discussion lists, chats, web pages and virtual learning environments were used during the courses to support teaching and learning and the interaction amongst students and tutors. Data were collected by means of questionnaires filled in at the end of the courses and reports made on diaries during three semesters. Results suggest that students are critical about the experience, pointing both advantages and disadvantages of the distance learning method.
