Abstract

This article focuses on the declining process of Yiddish theatrical representations in Argentina throughout the 1960s. The paper will first address the heyday of the Yiddish theatre scene in Buenos Aires, between the 1930s and the 1950s, to then explore the main factors that provoked the crisis that finally led to its decline during the 1960s.

Author Biography

Paula Ansaldo, Universidad de Buenos Aires

Paula Ansaldo es Doctora en Historia y Teoría de las Artes por la Universidad de Buenos Aires. Su investigación doctoral se centró en la historia del teatro judío en Buenos Aires y su influencia en el campo teatral argentino. Es becaria postdoctoral del CONICET con el proyecto “Representaciones de lo judío en la dramaturgia argentina de la postdictadura (1983-2002): tópicos, poéticas y memoria”. Forma parte como investigadora del Instituto de Artes del Espectáculo (UBA), del Grupo de Estudios sobre Teatro Contemporáneo, Política y Sociedad en América Latina (Instituto de Investigaciones Gino Germani-UBA) y del Núcleo de Estudios Judíos (IDES). Como docente se desempeña en la materia Historia del Teatro II de la carrera de Artes (FFyL-UBA). Ha co-editado el libro Teatro independiente: historia y actualidad (Buenos Aires: Ediciones del CCC, 2017) y publicados artículos académicos en Estados Unidos, España, Francia, Brasil, México, Polonia, Chile, Perú y Argentina. Ha recibido becas del CONICET, Fordham University-New York Public Library, American Philosophical Society, YIVO Institute for Jewish Research, Latin American Jewish Studies Association, University of Sussex, Université de langue et de litérature Yiddish à Strasbourg y Vilnius University. Es integrante de la Asociación Argentina de Investigación y Crítica Teatral (AINCRIT) y desde 2011 es jurado de los premios Teatro del Mundo.
