Fiberoptic bronchoscopy at Hospital de Clínicas de Porto Alegre

OBJECTIVE: The present study bases on the fact that the number of indications for the fiberoptic bronchoscopy accomplishment comes half increasing in our hospital.
As the institutions that receive the largest demand of indications for the use of this procedure are the university hospitals, we decided for an evaluation of this procedure and the population submitted to the exam.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: At the Hospital de Clinicas de Porto Alegre, 431 patients were submitted to the fiberoptic bronchoscopy exam during the year of 1995. The exams were accomplished with appropriate equipment, under conscious sedation, local anesthesia and measurement of the vital signs. The data were collected of medical records.
RESULTS: The main collection method was bronchoalveolar lavage, accomplished inabout 50% of exams. About the comorbidity associated to primary disease, it stood out chronic obstructive lung disease, with 26%. 90% of the indications were of elective
character, and 73% of the total of indications were patients of masculine sex. The prevalence of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome was 26%.
DISCUSSION: Some time ago, the profile of indications for fiberoptic bronchoscopy was limited to investigation of lung carcinomas, hemoptysis and removal of strange
body. At the present time, there was a significant amplification in the spectrum of those indications, besides with new applications.
