Abstract

This paper presents data findings of a research in which teachers´ experiences were analyzed in relation to their deaf students and to sign language, in the school environment, special deaf classrooms or in inclusion context. A questionnaire was applied with open questions, answered by teachers of a qualification course for teachers of Deaf people. The teachers´ narratives showed that, although there is recognition of sign language as an educational language of the deaf people, this requirement seems not to be taken seriously, because almost half of them do not obtain efficient communication with the deaf pupils. In addition, it was observed that there is a variety of proposals for teaching reading and writing, although it presents different conceptions of language and language teaching.
