This analysis highlights the ongoing process of reformulating the Basic Education Development Index (IDEB) in Brazilian education policy, which began in 2020. Anchored in documentary and bibliographic research, the text focuses on analyzing four issues in dispute with a view to the constitution of a New IDEB, linked to the learning component, namely: adaptation to international standards; updating of learning expectations; alignment of the IDEB with the National Common Curriculum Base (BNCC); and measurement of an IDEB by subject. The findings of the investigation point to a considerable effort by education reformers to influence the redefinition of the index and its strengthening as an educational accountability mechanism.
