Abstract
This article aims to contribute to the field of History of Brazilian Education by reading the work “Behind Ruão’s Cathedral”, by Mário de Andrade, written between 1923 and 1944, a time when the modernist revealed greater concern with social issues, education being a major element in this debate. In this way, if we consider that literary works are artifacts of culture, it is possible that they can be used by current historians to extract verisimilitude and understand, via representation, how domestic education was given by foreign preceptresses (CHARTIER, 2002). We used, for the elaboration of this text, the methodology related to the notion of historiographical operation (CERTEAU, [1975]/2020), through which we could verify that the tale reveals the challenges of the teaching profession and the demands of part of the São Paulo elite for a sophisticated but innocuous education.
