José Veríssimo, um clássico brasileiro: a antologia escolar como canonização literária e formação de leitores

Analisa-se neste artigo a antologia escolar “José Veríssimo – Crítica”, seleção e estudo crítico de Olívio Montenegro, editado pela Editora Agir, na coleção “Nossos Clássicos” (1958), como uma forma de recepção e seleção dos estudos literários da extensa obra histórica, educacional, etnográfica e literária de José Veríssimo. Argumenta-se que esta antologia escolar registrou o processo de canonização literária de José Veríssimo como crítico literário e, a partir disso, produziu o processo de formação de leitores ao aderir uma chave de leitura sobre a obra de José Veríssimo: a transformação em clássico brasileiro na consagração do crítico literário – contribuindo para um silêncio bibliográfico sobre os seus estudos dedicados a sociedade e a cultura amazônica oitocentista.
