O repertório dramático lido e encenado como estratégia educativa: capital da província mineira, 1850
Abstract
Theatrical texts were read and staged in Ouro Preto - MG, in the 1850s. At that time, men from the intellectual and ruling elite took a position on the educational function of the theater. By analysing a list of plays that were advertised in a local newspaper, we investigated the existence of a readership for dramatic texts in the capital of the province of Minas Gerais. We identified which plays were sold and supposedly read in that city; what these plays taught and whom they educated. We also analysed the plays that were staged the most, through advertisements in the city's newspapers. By relating the repertoire read and the repertoire staged, we observed that the former taught what were the references of “good taste” theater. In turn, the staged repertoire aimed to transform Ouro Preto society through laughter, ridicule and the exposure of Brazilian vices and bad customs on stage.
