Abstract

This article analyzes aspects of Brazilian education at the end of the 19th century based on the literary work O Atheneu, by Raul Pompeia, whose first edition dates back to 1888, and the drawings he produced to illustrate the second edition, published in 1905, after his death. Among the issues discussed, we include a comparison between the text and image representations made by the author of the school space and the figure of its director, as well as the possible relationships between the two types of creation – literary and graphic – and the context of the time. Reflections on the use of images in historical research were anchored in Aumont, Burke, Knauss and Manguel. To support the interfaces between the history of education and literature, the dialogue with Bosi and Cândido was fruitful. As a privileged source, in addition to the aforementioned work, we used images of the drawings, available in the National Library of Brazil.
