Simulation of natural lighting: combination of raytracing and radiosity algorithms and applications in Architecture
Keywords:

This article describes the MESTRE system for the simulation of light propagation, and its application in the built environment. The system was developed by the author in the Java language with the aim of creating a highly portable tool for teaching both in laboratory and on distance learning. The system provides access to discussions on concepts and also on the efficiency of the simulation procedures. On a brief review of the theoretical framework, basic equations for projecting objects on a surface are presented. Further, the methodology for calculating lighting, combining raytracing and radiosity procedures is explained. The production of diverse textures is mentioned. Some examples show possible and promising applications.Downloads
