Although autonomy is a competence cited in most of the Pedagogical Projects of Engineering Courses, there is rarely any reference to how this competence is developed throughout the course. Centered on the cognitive domain, the Teaching Plans do not even mention the objectives, methods and evaluation system that are used to develop the skills and attitudes that, together with knowledge, will compose this competence. This article presents the methodology used to develop and evaluate the autonomy of students in a traditional Brazilian Engineering Course. The evolution of the Autonomous Learning activity, created with the aim of developing autonomy, is described. The study shows that there is a relationship between autonomy and the results obtained in the cognitive domain.
