Abstract

This article has as a research object the documentaries of TV OVO project Por Onde Passa a Memória da Cidade which portray the past of two streets of Santa Maria/RS. From the films, we have created a theoretical framework about memory and identity, and through the concept of “place of memory” of Pierre Nora, we seek to understand how these nonfiction productions appropriate the city’s past, in a movement of reframing. While acknowledging that the documentary integrates a project of memory for Santa Maria, and since TV OVO is a community media, we understand that they frame the memory according to the official historiography, bringing testimonies of the elite in a linear and expositive narrative, reproducing a hegemonic discourse about the city’s past.
