Porto Alegre and its reflexes: the imagined city and the official city

Information about the historical origin of the city is presented as well as official and current data on area and population, identifying and characterizing its’ main neighborhoods. History and official data are related to the construction of the imaginary about the city. The article reflects upon the production of an official discourse, based on data and statistics and the relation between this discourse and the meanings produced by Porto Alegre’s inhabitants.
