Abstract

This study aims to map and analyze the presence and representativeness of sporting heritage in the context of the Google Arts & Culture platform. Performs remote searches based on the term “sport” to identify museums, collections, and cultural institutions whose collections and themes are related to sporting heritage. It analyzes the results found in the light of the available bibliography and information published by the identified institutions. It verifies that sporting heritage, museums and sport collections are underrepresented within the universe of results found on the Google Arts & Culture platform. In the context of the results obtained, notes that Australia and its sporting heritage have an expressive presence in comparison to other countries, in which important cultural institutions of sport are located. It concludes that, while Google Arts & Culture allows unrestricted and global access to a vast universe of institutions and cultural assets, the selection processes, partnerships, and curatorial decisions carried out by the Google Arts Institute are subject to influences and market demands that can lead to distortions, both regarding the institutions that make up the platform and the narrative associated with the cultural goods presented.
