Abstract

The article analyses the adequacy of the functioning of libraries in Rio de Janeiro in the context of the covid-19 pandemic. Objective: To investigate the planning and coordination of actions by public and private managers to adapt the functioning of libraries during the pandemic and its consequences. Methodology: Exploratory research, carried out in three stages: i) bibliographical research; ii) mapping with the collection of library registration data, whose geographical area is the metropolitan region of Rio de Janeiro; iii) collecting primary data, carried out directly with library managers, anonymously, through the application of an online questionnaire, consisting of 38 open and closed questions. Of the 411 emails sent, we compiled 95 respondents and analyzed these data using descriptive statistics, supported by the literature in the area. Results: Regarding the characterization of libraries, we observed that 76.8% of survey respondents are in the capital. Regarding the typology of libraries, 44.3% are university libraries, 38.9% are specialized libraries, and 16.8% are public libraries. We also noted restrictions on the use of physical space and material supports. However, some postponed projects were realized, such as the digitalization and virtualization of services, promoting a new meaning to libraries' actions already carried out in person. Conclusions: We noted good practices and optimization of resources used for library operation and maintenance. Libraries, especially those analyzed here, will never be the same again.
