Pierre Dardot’s Memória do Futuro: Chile (2019-2022), reconstructs the Chilean estallido to apprehend the forces that animated it and the horizons it opened for a renewed political imagination. Rather than revisiting the conceptual architecture of his celebrated work with Christian Laval, Dardot turns to the textures of the uprising to probe the prefigurative possibilities and the limits of democratic reinvention grounded in practices of the common. Re-reading Chile’s post-authoritarian trajectory, he foregrounds the Concertación’s governing ethos and the endurance of neoliberal reason, while resisting any reduction of society to a docile subjectivity. Drawing on the notion of a “memory of the future,” the book reorients temporality by reading the present from the standpoint of the future to be made. Organized into six chapters, it advances hypotheses accounting for the rechazo’s victory despite the draft constitution’s broadly progressive content - plurinationality, interculturality, ecological commitments, gender parity, the expansion of social and citizenship rights, and a redefinition of the state’s role in education, health, and social security.
