The Participation of Brazilian Rural Workers in REAF-MERCOSUR - the women's movements vision

The general objective of this article is to analyze the participation of Brazilian social organizations in the production of gender guidelines for the Specialized Meeting on Family Farming (REAF) of Mercosur. More specifically, the objectives are: to analyze the interactions between the Brazilian government and social organizations, as well as the demands presented by the Women's Movements; examine the results of these social practices of resistance and participation; and investigate the weaknesses of the participatory process - from the perspective of rural women. The methodology is qualitative, based on document analysis, observation and semi-structured interviews. The content analysis of the interviews was made using the free software IRaMuTeQ. The most outstanding results, in the view of rural workers, are linked to learning, dialogue, strengthening the quality of their presence in political spaces and greater visibility and national and international articulation of the Women's Movements. They managed to present their demands for economic and political autonomy, overcoming previous difficulties and actively contributing to the construction of democratic public policies. The main weaknesses refer to the fragile institutionality of these initiatives and the dependence on the political will of the governments in power.
