Guidelines for integrity and ethics in publications

The journal Saberes Plurais adheres to the ethical standards and best practices outlined in the "Principles of Transparency and Best Practice in Scholarly Publishing" – published by the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE), the Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ), the Open Access Scholarly Publishers Association (OASPA), and the World Association of Medical Editors (WAME) – as well as the Declaration of Helsinki, the Singapore and Hong Kong Statements on Research Integrity, National Health Council resolutions, and Law No. 14.874/2024.

Publication in the journal is contingent upon compliance with these ethical standards and best practices by all parties involved in the publication process, including editors, research fellows, authors, and reviewers.

Research ethics aspects

Studies involving human subjects (original articles) must comply with the Declaration of Helsinki, Law No. 14.874/2024 (which governs research involving human subjects in Brazil; available at: https://www.planalto.gov.br/ccivil_03/_ato2023-2026/2024/lei/l14874.htm), and the resolutions of the National Health Council (CNS) - specifically Resolution No. 466/2012 (available at: https://conselho.saude.gov.br/resolucoes/2012/Reso466.pdf) and Resolution No. 510/2016 for research in the Humanities and Social Sciences (available at: https://www.gov.br/conselho-nacional-de-saude/pt-br/atos-normativos/resolucoes/2016/resolucao-no-510.pdf/view). The methodology section of these articles must state that the study was approved by a Research Ethics Committee (CEP) and include the corresponding approval reference number. Furthermore, upon submission, the detailed (substantiated) CEP approval document must be uploaded as a supplementary file. Submissions lacking the required documentation will be immediately rejected prior to peer review.

Ethical aspects in experience reports

Articles characterized as experience reports - featuring a reflective description of a professional, teaching, student, or extension experience that has already taken place, and focusing on the author's perspective and the relationship between theory and practice - must include a letter of institutional consent at the time of submission in order to be accepted for review by the journal, if they disclose the name of the institution or location where the activity was conducted, or provide information that would allow for such identification.

Anti-plagiarism policy

Saberes Plurais employs and recommends the use of plagiarism detection tools.

The journal uses specific open-access software to analyze textual similarity in published articles. Confirmation of plagiarism results in the immediate removal of the text from the evaluation system and rejection of the article, as this constitutes a breach of ethical conduct.

In 2023, the journal used the Originality software from the Turnitin platform (provided by the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul) for textual similarity analysis. Since 2024, the journal has used CopySpider software (a freeware tool).

Use of Artificial Intelligence (AI)

The journal permits authors and reviewers to use AI to support the research process, specifically for improving the writing or refining the text of manuscripts or scientific reviews. Such use must align with the journal's scope and adhere to ethical norms and standards, prioritizing critical analysis and the originality of the texts.

For authors: Authors must declare any use of AI (preferably in the Methodology section of the manuscript). Authors are responsible for verifying the accuracy of references and citing them correctly, using only original materials and never content generated by AI. Authors bear responsibility for the text's intellectual property and ethical standards.

For reviewers: Reviewers must declare any use of AI (preferably in a footnote within the review), specifying the tool used and the purpose. During the review process, it is prohibited to input the entire manuscript - or parts thereof - submitted to the journal into AI tools. The aim is to ensure the originality of authorship and citations, thereby promoting integrity and ethics in scientific publishing.
