Sprites for educational games: an empirical study with generative artificial models

Resumo

Creating sprites for educational games presents challenges for computing teams related to artistic competence and the scarcity of suitable free resources in the educational field. This study examined the application of Generative Artificial Intelligence (GAI) models in generating sprites for educational games. We presented the research as an empirical, qualitative study with an exploratory design. The models generated characters (sprites) based on prompts we developed, and educational game experts evaluated them. The analyses include descriptive statistics and thematic analysis. The results reveal that all models generated adequate sprites, with DALL-E standing out in terms of average rating. The qualitative analysis highlighted the models’ potential for prototyping, despite ethical concerns and technical limitations.
