Abstract

The olympic games featured themselves to the inhabitant of Rio de Janeiro of the 1890s and 1900s as something beyond sport. Circus, theater and cinema were cultural spaces where those events could be enjoyed, as the newspapers of the time announced. The Olympic Games of the International Olympic Committee were also reported, however shared the attention of the newspapers readers of Rio with the unofficial olympic games, such as those held in Montevideo in 1907. Understood this context, I present in this article some questions concerning the ideal body in that period and its dialogue with the novelty represented by the olympic games.

Fausto Amaro (Universidade do Estado do Rio de Janeiro, UERJ – Rio de Janeiro/RJ, Brasil), Faculdade de Comunicação Social da Universidade do Estado do Rio de Janeiro (FCS/Uerj)

Doutorando do Programa de Pós-Graduação em Comunicação da Universidade do Estado do Rio de Janeiro (PPGCom/Uerj), com bolsa Faperj. Mestre pela mesma instituição, com bolsa Capes. Graduado em Comunicação Social, com habilitação em Relações Públicas, pela Uerj. Pesquisador no projeto "Meios de Comunicaçao, Idolatria, Identidade e Cultura Popular", coordenado pelo Professor Ronaldo Helal. É um dos editores do blog "Comunicação, Esporte e Cultura". Pesquisador associado ao GP de Esportes da Intercom (Sociedade Brasileira de Estudos Interdisciplinares da Comunicação) e ao LEME/Uerj (Laboratório de Estudos em Mídia e Esporte). Membro da Sociedade Internacional dos Historiadores Olímpicos (International Society of Olympic Historians). Tem experiência na área de Comunicação, com ênfase em Teoria da Comunicação, atuando principalmente nos seguintes temas: jogos olímpicos, futebol, história da mídia, herói e esportes.
