Abstract

This paper undertakes an analytical journey through the visual narrative of Brazilian daily newspapers, in order to understand how African-Brazilians are represented in such unquestionably strong discourses. The analysis of these images is then compared to another iconographic narrative: the one imprinted on history textbooks. The research evinces the recurrence of certain visual representational patterns that reinforce a negative image of African-Brazilians. It is important to highlight the role of these images in the process of identity construction, since identities are continuously transformed by discourse. This role is particularly significant in times of great image valorization, and especially in a country (Brazil) with so many non-readers. The final part of the paper tries to point out alternatives for the representation of this social Other.
