A função sistólica ventricular esquerda global é um dos mais importantes aspectos que determinam os desfechos dos pacientes com infarto do miocárdio. Aqueles com má função sistólica ventricular têm o maior potencial de se beneficiarem com a revascularização, desde que tenham miocárdio viável. O presente artigo foi escrito para rever as técnicas de imagens disponíveis e capazes de prover o cardiologista, no que se refere aos pacientes com infarto do
miocárdio suspeitado ou confirmado, de um diagnóstico acurado do miocárdio viável residual. O principal objetivo desta publicação é chamar a atenção para o papel da ecocardiografia de estresse com os diferentes agentes farmacológicos empregados na arena clínica da isquemia miocárdica, com o fim de se demonstrar a presença do miocárdio viável.
