This essay proposes a theoretical discussion that addresses the problem of rethinking aesthetic, hermeneutic and semiotic concepts such as the unity of the artwork, hermeneutic identity, and denotation-connotation, particularly in the case of works that lack a stable and well-defined structure. Consequently, the objective is to analyze the operationality of these concepts from the perspective of reception, projecting them onto the semiotic specificity of postmodern artistic practices. It concludes that the hermeneutic identity of an artwork is produced through the understanding performed by the receptors, which becomes more evident in artistic practices where the receptor is compelled to articulate, at a purely mental level, their own projection of denoted and connoted meanings to comprehend the artwork.
