This study aims to contribute to a deeper understanding of the experiences in visual arts offered to future educators and teachers of children (0 to 12 years old), as part of their initial training, in Portugal and Brazil. Qualitative and based on the multiple case study method, this research uses a questionnaire with the purpose of assessing two types of data: the perceptions of visual arts and the teaching practices of teacher educators. The triangulation of the results points to an oscillation between formalist-cognitive and expressive-psychoanalytic discourses, when analyzing the concepts underlying the purposes of the visual arts (first question) and the justifying factors of their childhood learning (second question) presented, which it was soon counterbalanced by the eminently socio- constructivist practices, some of them with post-modernist traits, described by the teacher educators. According to the active and collaborative methodologies, based on reflection and dialogue (and even on action-research and research on practice), which most teacher educators use in their teaching practices in visual arts curricular units from initial training courses in Brazil and Portugal, the profile of educator/teacher promoted is part of a reflective, critical and socially committed paradigm.
