Abstract

By trying to conceptualize the study of attention in the history of the cultural changes beginning at the end of the nineteenth century, the article intents to point for the need to understand attention as a cultural phenomenon and not one dictated by biology. This article shows that the concept of attention it is not homogeneous and that “to pay attention” which is strongly demanded in our contemporary society is only one of the acts of the complex process that includes modulations that go far beyond the attention- inattention binary. Thus, instead of focusing the discussion only in the attention which is necessary for learning, it intents to present some contributions about the learning of attention. therefore intends to contribute for the complexity of the diagnosis of attention disorders.
