Abstract

Translanguaging, as a practical theory of language and human communication, is an emerging topic that has been amply discussed in translation studies (Baynham & Lee, 2019; Han, 2022; Han et al., 2022). It emphasizes the multisensory, multimodal, multisemiotic and multilingual communication, encouraging creative and critical practices in meaning-making by breaking the boundaries of the semiotic and linguistic divides. Science fiction, as a fiction of imagination rather than observed reality, also breaks the divide between reality and imagination, embracing imaginative or fantastic premises and narrations. However, few studies have been conducted to study science fiction (SF) translation through the lens of translanguaging. This article aims to explore the way how translanguaging is employed as a method in SF translation, through the case study of the Portuguese translation of the phenomenal Chinese SF novel O Problema dos Três Corpos (The Three-Body Problem) written by Liu Cixin (2021). Imaginative and fantastic elements (such as neologism and unusual expression) are identified from the original Chinese version and compared with their counterparts in the Portuguese one. By describing and analyzing the meaning-making of translation of such expressions in light of translanguaging theory, we explore the creativity and criticality of the Portuguese translation and figure out how translanguaging is employed as a method to break the linguistic and semiotic boundaries in transferring the science fiction's meaning-making from the source text to the Portuguese readers.
