Do mito da classe homogênea ao ensino individualizado de aritmética: a concepção de Carleton Washburne

Nesse texto, busca-se discutir a partir das investigações de Carleton Washburne, importante pedagogo estadunidense, como se constituiu a individualização do ensino de aritmética, na escola primária, em meio a práticas alicerçadas no ensino simultâneo, método pelo qual todos deveriam aprender a um só tempo, um mesmo conteúdo. Para tanto, toma-se como material empírico de investigação as publicações de Washburne sobre as dificuldades das crianças na aprendizagem da aritmética, no período de 1919 a 1943. Sob a ótica de Certeau, a análise da produção de Washburne evidenciou “consumos combinatórios e utilitários” resultantes na reorganização educacional da própria escola, privilegiando o ensino individualizado de aritmética na escola primária. Tal ensino não se reduziu a uma questão de método ou de técnicas diferentes com as quais o professor deveria ensinar, mas de uma concepção pedagógica nova que modificou a própria aritmética e a relação professor-aluno-saber no processo educativo.
