Igreja, religião e ensino elementar antes das leis de laicização européias: um reexame crítico de suas relações
Abstract
ResumoEste artigo propõe um reexame do lugar ocupado pela religião no ensino elementar na época moderna, no seu conteúdo, no seu controle, nas suas grandes finalidades e nos seus objetivos pedagógicos concretos. A reflexão diz respeito a um caso específico: o das escolas de vilas de um cantão suíço, francofone e de religião reformada (calvinista), estudadas do século XVI ao século XIX. Mostra uma grande imbricação dos aspectos religiosos e laicos nesse ensino e um crescimento muito antigo da importância dos segundos, bem antes das leis de laicização da metade do século XIX, que terão, sobretudo, por objetivo a fundação da República baseada em uma noção ampla de cidadania. Essa conclusão poderia se estender de forma mais extensiva, apesar de certas especificidades, aos países católicos ou luteranos da Europa moderna.

Resume
Cet article propose un réexamen de la place tenue par la religion dans l’enseignement élémentaire à l’époque moderne, dans son contenu, son contrôle, ses grandes finalités et ses objectifs pédagogiques concrets. La réflexion porte sur un cas précis: celui des écoles villageoises d’un canton suisse, francophone et de religion réformée (calviniste), étudiées du XVIe au XIXe siècle. Elle montre une imbrication forte des aspects religieux et laïcs dans cet enseignement et un accroissement très ancien de l’importance des seconds, bien avant les lois de laïcisation du milieu du XIXe siècle, qui auront surtout pour but de fonder la République sur une notion de citoyenneté élargie. Cette conclusion pourrait largement s’étendre, malgré certaines spécificités, aux pays catholiques ou luthériens de l’Europe moderne.
