Abstract

With the democratic rupture implemented by the civil-military dictatorship in 1964, state coercion intensified in Brazil. The press was not oblivious to the events, including those involving educational issues. Considering this socio-historical field, this article aims to analyze figurations of the teaching profession at the beginning of the Brazilian civil-military dictatorship, according to the periodical press. To this end, we analyze the news, reports, columns and editorials published in Jornal do Brasil between 1964 – when the coup d'état was carried out – and 1968 – when AI-5 was approved. As a result, while on the one hand the training and performance of teachers were seen as figurations of the teaching profession that were essential to confront social ills and ensure the course of safe national development, on the other hand, they should be maintained in social order because they were subversive forces, according to the dictatorial logic.
