Abstract

This article studies the evolution of music education in Salamanca from its Golden Age in the 16 th century through to Franco’s dictatorship in the 20 th, prior to Spain’s transition to democracy. Salamanca is a distinguished Spanish University city whose academic tradition is widely acknowledged, and it will be our case study for revealing that in many aspects and epochs, music education remained anchored in the past. Based on the compilation of numerous sources and on new data, this study will therefore address music’s contexts and influences, its teachers and students, and its centres of learning, as well as other aspects related to the methodology, content, and resources involved. This long journey provides valuable insights into gender, culture, religion, and politics within the overall need to analyze each era and context, and continue exploring a field in which there is still considerable work to be done.
