Retrato da desigualdade educacional: as fotografias sobre a escolarização no sertão mineiro (1880-1940)

Abstract

This paper analyzes the schooling process in the “sertão mineiro” between the 19th and 20th centuries, investigating the republican rhetoric on education and the myth of the “sertão/sertanejo”, in comparison with photographic records of educational experiences in the region. Seven photographs were selected, revealing the daily life of educational experiences in the northwest of Minas Gerais. The research shows that the republican educational project, based on universal access to education, faced challenges in reaching the entire population. Among the factors that made that project unfeasible was the republican imaginary of the “sertão/sertanejo”, which resulted in a slow and precarious schooling process in the region, culminating in a system of educational inequality.
