This paper presents the results of an experimental research conducted to investigate the effects of temperature gradients on the wall tiling system and in particular on grouts, as well as thickness variations of the setting joint. Four vertical wall tiling panels were manufactured and applied on a single type of substrate: mortar roughcast on ceramic block masonry. The aforementioned panels were submitted to 20 cycles of heating and cooling, with temperature variations of 23-33 ºC to 60-70 ºC. The displacement was measured both before heating and cooling. Additional procedures at the end of every cycle included visual observations, tiling percussion tests, tensile bond strength tests on the ceramic tiles, as well as a thorough characterization of the tiling system materials. The main results of this research show that the type of grout and the thickness of the setting joints influence the performance of wall tiling when it undergoes temperature gradients.Downloads
