Culture Circles on SUAS: Roads for Emancipation

This experience report presents an intervention developed during a professional internship in Social and Community Psychology at a Social Assistance Reference Center (CRAS). The issue identified was that many users perceived the service through an assistentialist lens, which weakened their understanding of their rights and compromised their relationship with the institution. Recognizing users’ practical knowledge of their vulnerabilities, strengths, and of their relationship with CRAS, the intervention adopted Paulo Freire’s methodological principles, aiming to value this knowledge and collectively construct a broader understanding of the issue. To this end, five meetings were held to create Culture Circles with the local team and users of the Family Protection and Comprehensive Care Service (PAIF), focusing on strengthening critical awareness of the role of Social Assistance.
